Rio Verde Tartufi, a small Italian company specialising in truffles and truffle-based products, commissioned me to create the illustrations for two Christmas gift boxes, one square and one rectangular, giving me complete creative freedom.

With no logo or product copy competing for attention, the illustration had to carry the packaging’s identity. I chose to turn the truffle into the hair of the female figures. This playful interpretation gave the product a strong visual presence while creating an unexpected connection between the truffle and a traditionally expressive symbol of femininity.

Alternative Proposal - Sketch 03The visual language draws on 1960s and 1970s fashion, with graphic patterns, a limited palette, and bold, decorative shapes. Red, green, and white introduce a subtle Christmas reference, balanced by pink so that the boxes could remain appealing and relevant throughout the year.
I explored the concept through three alternative compositions before developing the selected direction: one centred on a single woman caught in the wind, and two others exploring the duality and variety of truffle species through multiple female figures. The final illustration combines movement, femininity, and the landscape of the Abruzzo region into a playful visual identity for the gift boxes.
